The Winnebago County Sheriff's Police Detective Bureau consists of the General Case Unit, Narcotic Unit and Crime Scene Unit. The Detective Bureau is responsible for conducting follow-up investigations for all crimes reported to the Sheriff's Department.
The General Case Unit is responsible for investigation, identification and apprehension of suspects.
In preparation for prosecution of all major criminal incidents, they work hand in hand with the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office and The United State's Attorney's Office. The detectives work closely with all area law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels. They assist smaller agencies in the county with follow-up investigations of major crimes.
Detectives are responsible for the registration and tracking of known sex offenders.
Staffing for the Detective Bureau is accomplished using varying hours of coverage based on need. When Detectives are not on duty, an on-call system is utilized providing 24 hour per day availability.
