The Cadet Program: The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department partners with The Public Safety Cadets Law Enforcement Sector to facilitate a Law Enforcement Cadet Program. The program is open to both males and females who reside in Winnebago County, however Membership of a resident outside of Winnebago County will first be at the discretion of the Lead Mentor. This program is designed to develop relationships with the youth residing in Winnebago County.
Program Objectives: The Cadet program provides exposure to a variety of criminal justice careers while fostering a positive interaction with law enforcement professionals. Cadets will gain hands on experience of the criminal justice system, helping them to make a more informed decision about a law enforcement related career. Cadets will learn the value of community service by assisting the Sheriff’s Department with community outreach and events including National Night Out, Police Memorial Week, and the Winnebago County Fair. The Cadet program will empower personal growth through self-building confidence, team building activities, engaging in challenging experiences, and setting high standards of personal conduct and performance. The program will also help Cadets with character development, while improving mental and physical fitness.
Participant Requirements:
14-20 years of age, and enrolled in a local academic institution maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Conviction of a felony is disqualifying.
Be willing to volunteer at Sheriff’s Office Community events.
Pay a fee to the Public Safety Cadets.
Be available for a brief interview.
Have the ability to participate in a physical fitness test.
