During the past several months numerous thefts have taken place at quarries in Winnebago, Boone and Ogle Counties. Hundreds of pounds of wire have been stolen along with tools. Major damage has been done to machinery from which the wire was stolen from.
In addition to the thefts from quarries thefts have also occurred from rural farm properties. Items taken include metal gates, fences and tools.
Detectives from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, Boone County Sheriff’s Department, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department and the Belvidere Police Department have worked together on this series of crimes.
On Sunday September 22, 2013 at approximately 11:20P.M. a truck was stopped by the detectives from the listed agencies. The truck was occupied by Andrew A. Garkey (DOB 5-20-87) and Cecil C. Sexton (DOB 11-24-87). The truck contained barbed wire, fence posts and other items determined to have been stolen from a farm property on Severson Road shortly before the truck was stopped. The truck was stopped near 6900 Kilburn Road.
A search warrant was executed on September 23, 2013 at 6949 Kilburn Ave, the residence of Garkey and multiple stolen items, including metal farm gates were recovered.
Garkey and Sexton are charged with felony theft and lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. They are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending relative to the thefts from the quarries.
