WCSO Explorers Program

WCSO Explorers Program
The Explorer Program:
The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department partners with the Scouts BSA to facilitate a Law Enforcement Explorer Program. Youth will undergo training from various units and departments at the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, to give Explorer’s knowledge of the challenges and job skills needed to serve in the law enforcement field. In addition to becoming certified in CPR, Explorers learn basic first aid, how to conduct traffic stops, as well as how to spot and handle Driving Under the Influence arrests.

Goals:
The goal of the Explorer program is to educate and involve the community's youth in police operations, to educate them in law enforcement functions and to interest them in law enforcement careers. The goals are achieved through several methods. Regular bi-weekly meetings are conducted from September to May where representatives of various law enforcement agencies (federal, state, county, and local) meet with the Explorers. The Explorer ride-along program allows members to observe firsthand the field activities of police.  Although most law enforcement Exploring activities are educational in nature, social activities are included. Participants have the opportunity to volunteer during summer events like National Night Out, Rockford’s 4th of July Parade as well as staff the Sheriff’s Department booth at the Winnebago County Fair.

Program Objectives:
The Explorers program prepares students for careers in law enforcement. Participants develop leadership skills and encourages the desire and skill to assist others in need. The program offers young adults a personal awareness of the criminal justice system through training, practical experiences, competition and other activities. The program also promotes personal growth through character development, good citizenship and patriotism.

Participant Requirements:
  • 14-21 years of age. Students must be 16 years of age to participate in ride-a-longs.
  • Conviction of a felony is disqualifying.
  • Possess the ability to clearly express thoughts in written and verbal form.
