Information: Closing of Rock River In Winnebago County |
Date: 06/13/08 | Time: 1200 Hrs. | Page 1 of 2 |
Narrative: Sheriff Richard A. Meyers is announcing that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has approved the closing of the entire Rock River within Winnebago County, due to the high water and hazardous river conditions. These conditions increase the likelihood of problems for boaters, or other recreational users of the river, which results in exposing first responders to dangerous conditions should a rescue situation develop. Residents of the area are reminded that as the water rises to record levels, flooding may continue to occur in areas previously not affected. Any additional rainfall will greatly impact the water levels, as the ground is saturated, and any significant amounts of rain over the next several days will add runoff to the water levels. Sand and equipment needed for sandbags is available at the former Logli’s Supermarket–8010 N. 2nd St.– Machesney Park. Due to the flooding that is occurring, the Sheriff=s Department Emergency Operation Center (E.O.C.) is open, as it has been since the threat for flooding began to develop. Citizens are urged to call the E.O.C. at 815-319-6215 with any issues concerning the flooding or other river related problems. The same weather and river conditions are causing similar flooding issues to the north, in Rock County (WI) and to the south, in Ogle County. The American Red Cross has an emergency shelter set up at the Harlem High School, 1 Husky Circle, in Machesney Park. Those needing to utilize the shelter are asked to bring pillows, blankets, and any personal items, and enter the school through door #7. The shelter will be staffed 24 hours a day. For further information, please contact the Red Cross at 815-963-8471.
